Agency Management System (AMS)
The core software an insurance agency uses to manage clients, policies, documents, activities and accounting in one system.
An agency management system (AMS) is the operational backbone of an independent insurance agency. It stores client and policy records, tracks activities and tasks, houses documents and correspondence, and handles agency accounting such as commissions, direct-bill reconciliation and producer payouts.
A modern AMS also connects to carriers through IVANS and real-time interfaces so policy data can flow in automatically rather than being keyed by hand. It typically integrates with a comparative rater, email, and increasingly a client portal or mobile app.
- Common examples: Applied Epic, Vertafore AMS360, EZLynx, HawkSoft, and QQCatalyst.
- Why it matters: the AMS is where E&O documentation, workflow consistency, and reporting on retention and book value all live.
Choosing an AMS is one of the biggest technology decisions an agency makes because migrating between systems is time-consuming.
