Broker of Record (BOR) / Agent of Record (AOR)

A signed letter from the client designating which agency or agent controls and services a policy with the carrier.

A Broker of Record (BOR) or Agent of Record (AOR) letter is a client-signed document naming the agency authorized to service a policy and receive its commissions from the carrier. It is how accounts move from one agency to another.

The terms are often used interchangeably, though "broker of record" is more common in commercial lines and "agent of record" in personal lines.

  • A BOR/AOR change transfers servicing rights and commission without re-writing the policy mid-term.
  • Carriers honor a properly executed letter, usually after a short waiting period.

For agencies, winning or losing a BOR is a direct book-of-business and revenue event, and defending existing accounts against BOR takeovers is part of retention strategy.
