Property & Casualty (P&C)
The branch of insurance covering property (homes, autos, buildings) and liability, as distinct from life and health insurance.
Property and casualty (P&C) is the segment of insurance that protects against loss or damage to property and against liability to others. It is distinct from the life and health (L&H) side of the industry.
P&C spans both personal and commercial business:
- Property — homeowners, auto physical damage, commercial buildings, business property.
- Casualty / liability — general liability, auto liability, workers\' compensation, umbrella.
Most independent agencies are primarily P&C shops. The tools discussed for agencies — comparative raters, download, certificate management, ACORD forms — are largely built around P&C workflows, since that is where the transaction volume and standardization are concentrated.
