Indio isn't a rater and it isn't a management system — it's the piece that fixes one specific, universally hated part of commercial insurance: the application and renewal data-gathering process. It replaces the PDF-and-spreadsheet application slog with a guided online experience its makers describe as "TurboTax-like," where the client fills in and verifies their own data. Indio is owned by Applied Systems, which acquired it in December 2019 specifically to digitize commercial-lines submissions and wire them into Applied Epic — so if you're an Applied shop, this reads very differently than if you're not.
What Is Indio #
Indio is a cloud-based digital application and renewal platform for commercial lines. Instead of emailing a client a stack of blank ACORD PDFs, the agency sends a guided online workflow; the client answers plain-language questions, and Indio maps the answers into the forms behind the scenes. On renewal, last year's data pre-populates the new year's forms, and the client only verifies what's unchanged and edits what isn't.
It's built for insurance agencies and brokerages handling commercial-lines applications and renewals. Named customers on Indio's site include Bouchard Insurance, Gregory & Appel Insurance, Parker Smith & Feek, ABD Insurance and Vantreo — mid-size and larger commercial agencies, which fits the profile: the more complex your commercial applications, the more the digitized workflow is worth.
Features #
Digitized applications and renewals #
The core is online forms that replace PDFs and spreadsheets for commercial applications. The "TurboTax-like" framing is the right mental model — the client is walked through questions in plain language rather than handed raw insurance forms.
Unified data gathering #
Indio unifies the data-collection step for both agency staff and the insured. Everyone works from one shared workflow instead of a chain of emailed attachments, versioned spreadsheets and "did you get my last file?" back-and-forth.
Renewal auto-population #
On renewal, prior-year data auto-fills the new forms; the client verifies what's the same and changes what's different. This is the feature that pays off year over year — renewals stop being a from-scratch exercise.
E&O risk reduction #
Because data is pre-filled and client-verified, Indio reduces errors-and-omissions exposure — the application data is captured cleanly and confirmed by the insured rather than transcribed by staff, so the submission that reaches the carrier and its underwriters reflects what the policyholder actually attested to. That maps directly to a real agent worry: in commercial lines, the data-entry gap between insured, agency and carrier is where E&O claims start.
Applied Epic and IVANS integration #
This is the differentiator, and it's a genuine strength if you're in the Applied ecosystem. Indio has a bi-directional integration with Applied Epic for data exchange between the two Applied products, and IVANS (also an Applied division) leverages Indio to expand data-exchange connectivity between agencies. The re-keying problem agents complain about between systems is exactly what this integration is meant to eliminate — for Epic users.
Pricing #
Indio is quote-only — no public pricing is disclosed. It's sold through Applied Systems, and there's a subscription-management portal for existing customers.
| Model | Detail |
|---|---|
| Pricing | Quote-only — no public price |
| Sold via | Applied Systems (demo / get-started flow) |
Pricing is by quote, which is typical for an Applied product; you'll size it through Applied's sales process rather than a posted rate.
Who It's For (and Who It Isn't) #
Indio fits commercial-lines agencies and brokerages — especially Applied Epic users — that want to kill the PDF/spreadsheet application grind and make renewals less painful. If your producers and account managers spend real hours chasing clients for application data and then transcribing it, and you're already on Epic, Indio is close to purpose-built for you: the bi-directional Epic integration is the whole point.
It's a weaker fit for a personal-lines agency (this is a commercial-application tool, not a personal-lines rater), for a shop that primarily needs to shop rates rather than collect application data (that's a rater's job — look at Tarmika or Semsee), and — the honest one — for agencies not on Applied. Indio works outside Epic, but its standout advantage is the Applied integration; if you're on a different AMS, you get the digitized-application benefit without the deep data-exchange payoff, which changes the value calculation.
Is It Legit and Worth It? #
Indio is a legitimate, established product with a clear, real use case, name-brand agency customers, and the backing of one of the two dominant AMS vendors. The problem it solves — commercial application and renewal data-gathering — is one agents genuinely dread, and the renewal auto-population is the kind of feature that compounds in value every year.
The honest caveats are about ownership and fit. Applied ownership cuts both ways: it's the source of the best feature (the Epic/IVANS integration) and also the reason the tool's value is uneven off-Applied. Agencies weary of the broader Applied relationship — cost, contracts, the paid-API model — should factor that context in, because buying Indio deepens your footprint in that ecosystem. And on the E&O-reduction claim: pre-filled, client-verified data genuinely helps, but "the client confirmed it" isn't a substitute for the professional review a clean submission still needs — the tool reduces transcription error, it doesn't remove the agency's duty to check the risk. As a fix for one painful workflow, though, and especially for Epic shops, it earns its place.
Alternatives #
- Tarmika — if the real need is rating/shopping commercial risks, not collecting application data.
- Semsee — small-commercial single-form quoting; a rater rather than an application-gathering tool.
- Zywave — a broader suite covering CPQ and content if you want more than the application step.
- Bold Penguin — a commercial quoting exchange for the distribution side of the same problem.
